Adoption Process PDF  | Print |

The hart adoption process has many steps, because we want to ensure as best as possible, that the correct match is being made for the animal. For that reason as well, the foster home has the final say in whether an adoption should proceed as they know the requirements and the personality of their foster animal best.

If you are interested in adopting a hart dog, this is the process you will be involved in:

  1. Applicant contacts the adoption screening line (780) 455-4278 for a telephone interview. Applicants will be asked about their history with dogs, what kind of dog they are looking for, what kind of yard they have, etc.
  2. If the applicant meets the preliminary screening criteria, his/her contact number is passed along to the foster home.
  3. The foster home arranges for an initial viewing of the dog at the foster home.
This gives the candidate a chance to meet the animal and gives the foster home a chance to meet the candidate.
  4. If the foster home believes that the applicant is a good match for the animal, arrangements are made for a day visit.
  5. The foster home delivers the animal to the applicant's home for a 3-4 hour visit.  This visit takes place during the day, never overnight. All members (human and pet) of the household must be present. The foster home reserves the right to cancel the day visit if they believe circumstances warrant cancellation.
  6. After the day visit, the animal is returned to the foster home by the candidate where permanent adoption is discussed.
  7. There is a mandatory 24 hour cooling off period to give the applicant some time to assess the addition of the hart animal to his/her life.
  8. If the applicant wishes to proceed, they contact the foster home to arrange to adopt the dog. All hart dogs are spayed/neutered in order to help control the population of unwanted dogs. The adoption fee of $210.00 cash covers the cost of this procedure. Should your dog not be altered upon the adoption, arrangements are made to have the surgery scheduled once the dog is mature.
